Has anyone taken the driving test recently?

Q. I have to take the CA DMV driving test next week- not the written test but the behind the wheel test (for a car, i.e., not truck). I'm curious as to what's involved. I took the New York test many years ago and it asked me to drive around a residential neighborhood, make turns using signal and to demonstrate parallel parking. The toughest part was the parallel parking as you had to do it correctly in one shot or you failed. Is the CA test similar? Has anyone taken the test recently? If so, I would greatly appreciate an overview of what I can expect.

A. If you take a look at the DMV website for “driving Test” @ (“http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/hdbk/pgs06thru09.htm”) I don’t see any mention of parallel parking tests. However, all the items noted on this page were part of my test (when I moved from NY) a few years back. What they did to me, instead of testing parallel parking, was to ask me to pull over to the curb, as close as possible, without touching the curb. I was asked to slowly move-up to the end of a long city-block scheduled for street sweeping (e.g. no parked cars anywhere on the entire block). THEN - as I smirked at having put my tires so close to the curb that it was impossible to slide a sheet of paper between them and the curb, the examiner asked me to back-up the entire length of the block without touching the curb or edging out into the street. That was one heck of a surprise – but I did it! (FWIW – backing-up testing is listed on the DMV website)
