Ged Test ResultQ. Has anyone had their ADD or ADHD child rejected from a talented & gifted program because of variability in test results & teacher observations? If so, were you able to reverse the decision by the school? What did it take to do so? A. This is a common problem (I've been through it with both my kids), compounded by the fact that so many people don't realize how common it is for ADD kids to *also* be gifted, or how often hidden learning disabilities are masked in a bright child who learns to compensate. Compound all the above with the fact that "gifted plus learning difficulty" is still an oxymoron in many people's minds. You don't say whether your child has been formally diagnosed, and if so whether you are receiving accomodations under the Disability laws (Section 504 or IDEA)? The people who I have seen work with this problem within the system successfully have had to go the whole route of formal diagnosis, testing, classification and advocacy, becoming very well informed of their rights and knowing what to ask for. To get a sense of what that route entails, you might check out www.wrightslaw.com. This is a site by an attorney and his psychologist wife who help people struggling to get accomodations for their kids in school. The other route is to leave the system, opting for private school or independent study, which are the two routes I took with my two kids as I did not have the stamina personally to fight all those battles. There is also a lot of good information online about the combination of giftedness and learning disability that you will find useful regardless of the route you select. Use "gifted" and "LD" in a good search engine like Alta Vista or dogpile.com and you will collect a lot of pointers. You might also wish to browse Lucy Jo Palladino's book "The Edison Trait" and see if her descriptions sound like your child as well. If so, she gives a lot of coping tips and strategies for parents to use. Anyway, been thinking, perhaps, You should only have to pass the GED (presently restricted to 16 or older) or maybe ACT/SAT could be used in some way. The goal of our schools is to provide a general education so I don't see why these couldn't be used.... Other Questions : Ged PracticeI am in Texas.
