Q. Aren't there any socratic teachers left out there? Aren't there any people passionate about their field, excited about why baseballs travel in an arc, how many flagella a protist has, or what happened following the hundred flowers movement? What about stripes on zebras and comets and why the full moon always looks bigger near the horizon? Learning is not torture! And p.s. I don't teach horses to be good slaves, either. I think it's because it's November. It's been November for a while now. A dormant time for passion, baseball, flagella, flowers, and zebras. Comets are still holding up. So is torture. (They call it 'Sensitivity Training' nowadays). And the horses are planning a revolution.
A. My late brother taught an experimental class like that in NYC. He had a group of above average students and their classroom was the city. If they United Nations was a topic. he would teach about it on the ferry as they travels to the U.N. They didn't have a classroom. My father told me that one of my brother's former students stopped by to visit him in Copake, N.Y. They made trips up there also. I group of them all adults now, came by to pick up mementos when i cleaned out his place after he died.
